Boulder Mountain Clinical Programs is not wilderness therapy, it is therapy in the wilderness.

Boulder Mountain Clinical Programs are just that, clinical programs. Expeditions with Boulder Mountain are small group trips (maximum of 6 participants) tailored toward specific mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD. Each course has a research-based therapeutic curriculum that dovetails with outdoor activities, including team building (with a zip line!), backpacking, rock climbing, caving, paddling, and trail running. Participants receive group and individual therapy from David Glaser, LCSW prior to and throughout the course. This makes it possible for a portion of the tuition to be reimbursable by insurance providers. Boulder Mountain courses are meant to not only be helpful and healing, but also — and just as importantly — very, very fun.

I am forever grateful to David Glaser for creating this program! It was a truly unique combination of nature, mindfulness, social connection and clinical support that we couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. My fifteen year-old daughter returned home with a deep sense of self, and more so, proof that she could do hard things. This newfound, earned confidence is still with her today. She is now better able to manage her anxiety with the tools learned, while maintaining a strong sense of self separate and distinct from the anxiety. For all of these reasons and more, sending her on this adventure was one of the best parenting decisions I’ve ever made.

what sets boulder mountain apart?

Wilderness programs and wilderness therapy are not new concepts, but there are some key aspects of Boulder Mountain that set it apart from existing programs.

  • Participants learn new mindfulness techniques and are given time for daily mindfulness practice.

  • Participants experience warm, caring, and relationship-based interactions with the therapist and staff.

  • Courses incorporate holistic support for mental health, including nutritional and integrative interventions that address specific mental health issues. This means that food and natural interventions (i.e. exercise, time in nature, yoga, antioxidant rich/plant-based meals) all support an individual’s progress.

  • Tuition is partially eligible for reimbursement from insurance.

  • Boulder Mountain expeditions were created and designed by a therapist who worked in wilderness therapy programs for years.

  • Courses are led by a licensed therapist. This means that the therapist is with the group EVERY DAY, ALL DAY and “24/7” during the expedition phase.

  • Courses are small, with a maximum of 6 participants and 3 staff. This translates to a 2:1 ratio.

  • Participants can decide when and how much to challenge themselves, both emotionally and physically.

  • Boulder Mountain courses help participants learn leadership skills and develop a personal leadership style.

For whom are these courses designed?

These courses were made to fill a void in our current therapeutic and wilderness model. Boulder Mountain courses are intended for young people in need of intensive help and support with their struggles, but DO NOT need to spend 45-60 days in wilderness therapy due to being in crisis. Boulder Mountain was also created for young people who would love to participate in a wilderness expedition, but would benefit from a smaller group setting with more access to staff. If you or your teen/young adult wants to have a lot of fun and be challenged to achieve emotional and physical goals in a very warm and relationship-based environment, then this course is for you/them!
